I happen to buy this product directly from HP. I had it for two weeks and the interal display broke. Called HP tech to find out about getting it repaired, and was told that it was my fault that it broke, and that it was not something that could be repaired, bottom line I was told I had to buy another at 160.00. I have had a complain into Hpheadquarters for about a week now and have not gotten a response. Next step is the better business bereau.

Very powerful calculator. Dizzyingly powerful. Excellent display. Positive click buttons. If you're doing basic algebra, trig, logs, it is very easy to use. I find that when doing more advanced functions, I'm always needing to reference something in the manual to get it done. Sometimes hard to find functions on the keypad, since there are as many as 4 labels per key. SD card works well, but causes about a 2 second delay every time you turn on the calculator, which can be a nuisance when you're in a hurry. I like the very large RPN stack capability, as well as controllable font, where you canshow more than just the 6 lines of the stack that it defaults to. Would recommend the 50g to anyone needing a lot of power. I've really only used the 50g in RPN mode, but it will do AOS also.

I purchased the HP 49g+ in August of 2004 as a replacement for its predecessor, the HP 49G.In my initial review of the 49g+, I downgraded it from 5 to 3 stars because of problems with keys not registering, and because of the amateurish user documentation.HP made a new firmware release available in May 2005, and it appears that the problems with key presses not registering were largely due to flaws in the way that key events were handled in the software, which evidently have now been fixed, with the possible exception of the function keys along the top row.That would have motivated me to increase my rating, were it not for the problem with the tendency for the keypad to wear out prematurely, which I have recently discovered.The Delete key on my 49g+ broke recently, and HP replaced it with a new unit.When I took the broken unit apart, I wasn't pleased with what I saw.Unless changes have been made to the keyboard design, I can confidently predict that the keyboards on all 49g+ calculators will break long before any external sign of wear, and when this happens, the calculator will become an expensive paper weight.Because I have no reason to expect the keypad design has been changed, I have no choice but to withhold any recommendation for this calculator.This is especially lamentable because if you consider only the remarkable capabilities of the software that runs on this calculator, it would easily garner a 5-star rating.

The user documentation that HP provides is woefully inadequate in numerous areas such as the important Equation Writer application and calculator programmability.The two CAS modes that each influence whether the calculator returns exact, symbolic results or approximate, numeric results, are fundamentally important.Given that these two mode settings are independent binary flags that differ in their esoteric effect, exact descriptions of the effect of each of these modes is fundamentally important.Yet, the descriptions given in the manuals are incorrect and useless.

In order for you to be able to anticipate what the calculator will do in any given scenario, you need to have a meaningful understanding of the rules that govern recursive expression evaluation, which is at the heart of calculator operation.Yet, you cannot find a meaningful discussion of expression evaluation anywhere in the user documentation.Prior to the introduction of the 49g+, you could acquire a meaningful understanding of expression evaluation by reading the manual page for the EVAL command in the 49G reference manual.But HP has since removed that manual from their web site.That not only removed the only accessible explanation of expression evaluation, it removed the only meaningfully complete descriptions of the calculator's 700+ commands.The only mention of EVAL in any of the documentation that is currently available is in the description of the keypad, which tells you that when you press the EVAL key, the EVAL command is performed.

If you write a program that has the essential characteristics of a mathematical function and you want to use the function plotter to plot its output, then you will have an opportunity to explore the nuances of the function plotter.When an algebraic expression is plotted, it is evaluated both before and after the x-coordinate value is substituted in place of the independent variable name.If you use a simple algebraic expression to invoke your program, your program will be passed the literal name that you have designated as the independent plotting variable, instead of the x-coordinate value.If you have written your program so that it will return a numeric result no matter the setting of those two important CAS modes, the static value of the actual global variable that you have named as the independent plotting variable will be used instead of the x-coordinate generated by the function plotter.If you are lucky, you will see a straight horizontal line in the plot window, which will give you a clue that the y-coordinate values are all generated using the same value for the independent variable.More likely, you will have trusted the function plotter to automatically set the vertical range of the plot window, and it will have chosen a vertical range appropriate for the static value stored in the actual variable and then will have changed its value so that when plotted, the constant function no longer falls within the vertical plot range.It is easy enough to steer clear of this lovely business if you can control the urge to smash the calculator long enough to discover that this nonsensical behavior only occurs when there is an actual variable having the name that you have designated as the independent plotting variable.

If you play with many of the plotters, you'll eventually get an error that simply says "Interrupted", and you won't find anything anywhere that gives you a clue why this happens.If you call HP's help desk, they will advise you to delete the reserved variable `PPAR', which is a nested list that holds the plotting parameters.Almost all of the plotters use this variable, but the structure and interpretation of the nested list varies from one plotter to the next.The various plotters don't bother to insert a descriptive label in the list, so when you open a plotter with `PPAR' left over from a different plotter, the plotter that you are currently trying to use will be confused by the unfamiliar structure, and may attempt an illegal operation that will lead to the useless error message.

The PC connectivity works great once you have installed it correctly and have learned to disconnect and reconnect the cable as needed.The install utility requires you to select what you want to install from a list and then it copies the files that make up the manuals, connectivity kit, USB driver, etc.It gives you no clue that you will need to install the special USB driver, but if you guessed that you need it, you got lucky, unless you tried to follow the driver installation instructions included on the CD, which don't work.

In May of 2005, when my 49g+ was not quite ten months old, the delete key broke, so HP sent me a replacement.HP didn't ask me to return the broken unit, so I took it apart.Three different techniques are used to attach the keys to the underneath of the faceplate.The four keys that are used to move the cursor (the arrow keys) are held in place by a single rubber sheet that is attached to the faceplate.Each of the three colored keys is a separate part, with each individual key rocking on its lower edge.There are two shades of grey keys on the keypad, and a block of black keys.There is one molded plastic part for each of these, i.e., one molded part for the top row of keys, another molded part for the block of grey keys, and another molded part of the block of black keys.These parts are fastened to the underneath of the faceplate, and each consists of a frame that holds the individual keys, all one molded part, and with the individual keys separated from the frame except by two thin strips at their lower edges.If you have ever put together a plastic car model and have seen how the individual parts need to be cut away from a frame of sorts, you have a good idea of what these three molded parts look like.

All three techniques for holding the keys to the faceplate permit the individual keys to press against a little rigid bump on a sheet of stiff plastic that covers the circuit board.Each bump is roughly 5 mm in diameter, and there is a thin conductive coating on the underside of each bump.When force is applied to the center of the bump, it inverts with a pop, pressing the conductive coating against the circuit board and closing the circuit across the contacts that are exposed on the surface of the circuit board.Except for the bumps, the underneath of the stiff plastic sheet has an adhesive that holds the sheet to the surface of the circuit board.

The problem with the top row of function keys is that the bumps are located against the upper edge of the plastic sheet.The effect is that the bumps on the top row aren't rigid enough to invert correctly with a pop that will cause the conductive coating underneath to make solid contact with the circuit board.The replacement unit that HP sent me does not seem to have the same problem.This may be because the physical design was changed slightly, or it may be because the de-bounce algorithm in the earlier firmware exacerbated a problem with a weak contact, but it is more likely because the plastic sheet on the new keypad hasn't broken in yet.But even if the problem with the keys on that row not consistently registering returns, soon thereafter it will be rendered moot when the keys break.My Delete key broke because the two thin strips that hold it to its frame, broke in two under repeated use.I observed that the same failure mode was ready to happen with the Enter key and the F3 key as well.When those two thin strips break, the key will move around and will become unusable because it has a short protrusion underneath that must be positioned directly at the center of the little bump in the plastic sheet underneath.Having inspected this first hand, I cannot avoid the conclusion that all 49g+ calculators are doomed to premature death because of this ridiculously cheap design.

If Bill Hewlett were alive, he would surely have something to say to the person responsible for allowing his legacy to be tarnished in connection with this junk.HP urgently needs to make a design change to the 49g+, and then needs to send a new calculator to all of the present owners of these calculators.All that is likely needed is to use the design that is used with the arrow keys, for the other keys that are attached to their frames with the two thin strips.With that change, these calculators could easily last for one or two decades, but if HP doesn't do something about this real soon, these calculators are all going to be converted to expensive paper weights very soon, and the damage to HP's reputation as a calculator manufacturer may be irreparable.

I have owned numerous calculators by HP, TI, Sharp, Casio, etc., but this new Classpad 300 Plus that was just released a few weeks ago with Casio's latest operating system (OS 3.0) and Classpad Manager 3.0 is just fabulous. It is now in common use in Europe, especially in Germany and also in Australia and in New Zealand. If you purchase(d) the version with OS 2.0, you can still upgrade electronically to the newest version using the Classpad Manager Version 3.0 directly which has a number of very nice new features/functions. This calculator should also be in common use in the USA as well, but regrettably the financial dominance of TI in our marketplace (and the impending arrival of the new TI NSpire calculator) make the likelihood of its acceptance very soon quite small, unless people like myself write reviews like this to promote educators to really get involved with this new product. The real advantage of both the Classpad as well as the TI NSpire calculator (which is not a pen-based product like the Classpad) is the great software that installs on PC's so that a complete emulation of its operations is possible even without the calculator being physically available. It addition, however the Casio (OS 3.0) will do now do Dirac Delta functions, Heaviside Step functions, Fourier and Laplace Transforms (including Fast Fourier Transforms, i.e., FFT's), First order ordinary differential equations, financial analyses, and of course it already performed complex number analyses, etc.
The operating feature on the Classpad that appeals to me the most however is the pen-based drag and drop operations using the Computer Algebra System (CAS) and the interactive menu between each of the numerous types of submenus on the device. Any operation worked on in one area (Graphs and Tables for example) can readily be copied and pasted into another area (Statistics, Spreadsheets, Sequences, etc) just to name a few of the numerous possibilities. The E-activity submenu on the Casio supports presentations to an audience and is the analog for the Classpad of the TI NSpire's 4 screens of information that can all be put on to a single screen at once (analyzing a problem using a geometrical representation in the form of a drawing or a picture, a word statement of the problem, an analytic or numerical equation solution and a graph of the results). Finally, the results can all be ported back and forth and printed/stored, etc. between the Classpad Manager software/emulator and the calculator itself which is simply fantastic to use. I have had this for almost a month now and I am just begining to appreciate what it can do for me daily in my work as a scientist. If students get exposed to these devices in a late middle school curriculum and beyond (after they first master many of the basics of mathematics and science), in my opinion they will want to continue to grow into math and science in their later years and become excited leaders in science and engineering that this country has been famous for having for most of the last 60 years.

This calculator is exactly what I wanted and needed. I have owned top of the line graphing calculators from HP, Casio, Sharp, TI, etc., but overall I like this one the best due primarily to its simplicity and ease of use. I like it especially for trips and outside activities when I can do quite useful mathematical explorations that I don't normally have time for at home or in the office with my busy schedule. It was designed by HP and teachers, first and foremost however, as an aid in teaching University students mathematics in a very user-friendly manner.

PROS:

1) It is simple, fairly light and quite fast (75 MHz clock speed), algebraic equation operating system (EOS), but not with HP RPN, but a very useful and versatile unit. The hp 40gs is now about two years in production having replaced the 40G with a much better designed keyboard, etc. as described below.

2) Very well organized analysis activities using special Aplets with about a dozen available with the unit and many many more on the world wide web (or you can write your own since programming is also available on the 40gs). These specialized Aplets include analysis of functions, parametric equations, the famous HP solver system, statistics, etc. (with least squares curve fits available for about a dozen types, such as cubic, exponential, power law, logistic or even a user defined type, etc.!). The unit also has about 200 kb of available RAM and about 2 Mb of ROM for the operating system which is a lot more than even the hp 48gII for example.

3) It will supply three types of analysis for every problem, namely a numerical table of values, a graphic plot (only two-dimensional types however) and a symbolic analysis which is completely possible for even very complicated Calculus cases (polynomials and basic trig, logarithmic and hyperbolic functions and much much more, etc.). It also does numerical differential and integral Calculus as well and it can even supply a Taylor series approximation for all of your functions. It can also display a fine split-screen view (side by side) supplying a table of values as well a plot which is also very useful (with many useful zoom options).

4) It also handles very advanced mathematical functions (including hyperbolic functions, the Gamma function, Hermite and Legendre polynomials, etc.) and of course can be used to analyze complex numbers, lists and matrices and can even take the square root of negative numbers directly in a very straight forward manner (unlike the HP 35s)!

5) It also allows the user to make detailed notes and sketches and also interfaces very nicely with a PC using the USB cable supplied with the unit for exchanging information. It also has an RS-232 (serial) as well as an infrared transfer option available as well.

6) It comes with a well written and well organized and very detailed ~400 page users manual and with an even more advanced manual available on the supplied CD. Many example and quite useful solutions are presented in the manual.

7) It has a new Flash ROM so that the calculator can be electronically updated if new EOS software ROM's are produced by HP without changing out the hardware.

8) Date and time is always available with the on-board clock (using the DISPTIME command)

9) The unit has a totally redesigned keyboard that has quite an excellent feel to it (unlike the fiasco's connected with the HP 49g series for example and even better in my humble opinion than the revered HP 50g now in production for over two years too which I have also owned). The overall unit seems to be very well made and should last a very long time too. As always, the HP calculator special self tests are excellent and are triggered by simple keystroke commands. Also, Typing RULES or AMIGOS in "Home" produces two "HP easter eggs" of people who were involved in the design and production of this great system.

10) It has a completely scrollable operations history in HOME (unlimited within the available RAM memory and also easy to erase when extra memory is needed) that is very easy to manipulate by using the Copy command to recall previously evaluated expressions in order to perform quick "what-if" analysis, etc.

11) It is also very intuitive to operate in my opinion even without HP RPN. It is a great start to get university students interested in doing more math and science too which is a very good thing considering recent trends in North America.

12) Its CAS (Computer Algebra System) is fantastic and has all features available in the revered HP50g, but which are much more intuitive and easier to use.This package has many many very advanced functions which are extremely useful to scientists. Integral and differential calculus problems are extremely easy to perform with this machine. There are also standard commands to easily move results from the CAS to HOME and back again in order to perform different types of analysis capabilities (graphical and otherwise). In addition, it will also solve differential equations within the CAS.

13) Over a year ago now HP announced that it was partnering with another company in Oregon to make this and its sister machine the HP39gs available as a laboratory measurement system in schools (39GS) and universities (40GS). If this actually happens this calculator will really be quite an asset to all prospective science as well as engineering students.

14) It is available directly right now from MobilePlanet (or its parent company Expansys), at buy calculators on-line in the uk and at amazon in the uk, but hopefully it will be more generally available all over N. America soon.


CONS

1) The batteries only last 65 hours according to HP. I can't confirm this fact as of yet, but it uses 4 AAA batteries as well as a common Lithium battery to be used as a backup while changing the main batteries.

2) It is quite thick in comparison to other such calculators and in spite of the supplied high quality slide-on cover (a maximum total 1.22 inches thick with the cover on for protection), HP should have supplied a good case for further protection as has been its standard for many other of its calculators (including the HP 35s). Why just imitate the other manufacturers with a slide-on cover for its only protection? HP has always gone its own way in this field considering how few people really understand or actively use RPN logic every day (which I have previously always preferred for many years now). Most of us now have easily accessible computers and compilers to do most computing tasks. I usually use a calculator at work only to carefully check intricate computer calculations, but when I do I want it to be simple and easy to use, especially since I don't use it every day.

3) The statistical applet correlation coefficient provided is only for a linear curve fit (regardless of the fit assumed). The relative error is provided instead for both the linear curve fit as well as for any of the other curve fit options.

4) It only has a very limited number of conversion factors and embedded universal constants (29) available in its memory.

I had high hopes of this calculator being a "real" 48G, maybe with a faster processor running an EMU, but the original case/key design and ROM.

My trusty HP48GX no longer functions properly, the 3, 6, and 9 keys fail to register when pressed.

Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard would join me in my sadness and disappointment at the lack of innovation at HP, and the pathetic replacements offered to the fine 48GX, the lowly, rubber keyed, algebraic entry, plastic faced, 49G and 48GII (both of which I have tried and rejected).

Upon inquiry to HP customer support about the possibility of getting a 48GX repaired, it became apparent that the cheap printers they make, Carly's merger with Compaq, and Hewlett Jr.'s denouncement of the company's current direction are indicative of the level of service and quality of customer support technicians hired by HP, [...]
While searching for a replacement for my 48GX, I encountered a strange phenomenon, used HP48GXs are selling for twice what the new flagship HP calculator costs, and as much as $400-$900 for the few unused 48GXs still around.This is a testament to the failure of HP to continue to provide innovative products, and to the brilliance of the engineers and programmers of the original 48GX at the now defunct Corvallis research facility.

How can a nearly 15 year old technology product still remain the most desirable and sought after in it's class?Only through initial brilliance coupled with the failure of executive management to develop and support the innovation required to improve such a product rather than trying to replace it with a lesser machine.What right-minded consumer would purchase a 49 to replace a 48?

Alas, we have witnessed the demise of the only truly innovative producer of engineering calculators.What does the slogan "HP Invent" mean today?

The talent behind the last several 48G ROMs, Jean-Yves Avenard and Gerald Squelart have given me renewed faith in the future of calculators. After being fired by the new HP, they have taken it upon their selves to create the finest calculator in the world, the Qonos, and I eagerly await it's release. [...]

In the meantime, I am about to embark upon an all-or-nothing attempt to service my own HP, a process which involves a drill press, razor blades, and surgical precision in hopes of extending it's life once again.

Good luck, and protect your HP from cheap batteries and wrong-doers at all costs.
