(More customer reviews)The TI-Nspire CAS is an improved version of theTI-89 calculator. Like the TI-89 it has graphing and symbolic capability as well as the usual calculator functions.What is new in this calculator over the TI-89?The features that I have been able to identify and use are a definite improvement.One feature is that there are templates for most of the operations needed in calculus.These include integration, differentiation, limit, product, and others.The templates make it less likely that there are syntax errors in entering a calculation.The templates can also be used in programs as well as doing individual calculations.

It is possible to organize problems and documents on the TI-Nspire CAS.You can save work as documents.The documents have pages to organize the work into logical divisions.Your work can be saved and retrieved in an organized way.It is also possible to have more than one window displayed at a time.By this means you can monitor a graph as a parameter is changed or you can immediately see the effect of changing some part of a program.

The software version of the TI-Nspire CAS calculator is invaluable for those using the calculator in the classroom.Now you can bring a laptop to class with the software installed.By connecting the laptop to a projector, you can now teach the use of the calculator very effectively.The display is more detailed than projecting the calculator display.With the software version is also easier to write programs and do calculations since you have the computer keyboard and mouse.

Are there drawbacks?The TI-Nspire CAS is definitely intimidating.Once you have learned to navigate its many features, it is very powerful.However, without help, you will have trouble seeing how to do even some of the simple things that you may have in mind.As the calculator becomes more popular, this will not be the problem that it is now.Now, there is no one to turn to when you are frustrated.

As an example, I created some functions.They were examples to see how to create the functions and use them.When I was finished I wanted to delete them.But how do I delete them?Being familiar with the TI-89, I thought that the process would be similar.The familiar ways in the TI-89 did not work on the TI-Nspire CAS.Now that I have figured it out, it is simple enough.But finding the solution to this and other problems can be frustrating for the beginner.A human guide would be helpful and for most people essential.

How does the software compare with Maple and Mathematica?The TI-Nspire CAS software is limited, but has enough capability to be useful for classroom use.

(More customer reviews)This cable is a very handy thing to have. It is extremely useful for calculator backups (a good thing to do every once in a while in case your TI crashes), and you can download a bunch of stuff off the Net to put on your calculator. ... /
The software for different calculators (I have linked to the TI-83, the TI-85, and the TI-86) is more or less the same; the confusing thing is that every calculator has a different procedure for linking. With some (such as the 86), you must be at the home screen; with others (such as the 85), you must be in receive (or send) mode.
One warning, however: This cable ONLY works with Windows. If you're a Mac user, you must buy the other (and more expensive) all-purpose cable. Amazon.com sells this cable as well.
All in all, I would highly recommend buying a Graph Link. Make sure you have an available serial port, plug the cable in and go. Have fun playing Tetris. :-)

(More customer reviews)I called Texas Instruments asking what is the difference between this and the standard TI-84+Silver edition model.Basically, this is the teacher version with an extra port to attach a screen so that students can see what you are doing.Functionally there is no difference. TI basically said that if this version is cheaper (which it is by $20 when I wrote this) there is no real reason NOT to get this one rather than the "standard" version.When I received this item, it INCLUDED the additional display screen and a carry bag along with the calculator.Pretty good deal!

(More customer reviews)Have used Casio scientific calculators throughout my life. I've had my 115MS for some three years now. I use it for electronics design and I've been constantly amazed at how every special function I ever need is there. Binary/hex/decimal conversions, engineering conversions including metric prefixes (kilo, micro, nano, pico etc. which I find simply indispensable), complex numbers, etc. The CALC function is particularly useful when I want to see how different values will alter the answer to a formula/equation.

One thing that peeves me though is that it takes three keystrokes to store a value in memory (variables). That's cumbersome.

Overall this inexpensive calculator gets a three thumbs up from me. If Casio makes an exact model with added programmability, I think it just might be the perfect calculator for me.

(More customer reviews)I have been using a version of this Sharp calculator from early high school all the way up thru a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering and now as a professional - it rocks! For science/engineering students, there is none better. It is simple and will do everything you need (almost - see below). Forget about those cumbersome, expensive graphing calculators. Save some money and buy one of these bad boys instead. Graphing calculators are a waste of time - learn how to do it on paper. This calculator deserves 5 stars, but I can only give it 4 because they took away the conversion functions for hexadecimal, octal, and binary numbers - essential for computer science & electrical engineering students. What the heck! Where can I still buy the EL-506? Mine finally broke...
